Gripped With Fear

Are you feeling overwhelmed and anxious?

Sometimes, when I am faced with a difficult situation or things happen beyond my control, I have a tendency to be overcome with a literal sense of fear. It’s as if my heart is being physically held down and I can actually feel the pressure being applied to it.

Or you can feel as if you are in a sea and a huge wave has crashed over you, where the water has completely crushed you with its power and instantly consumes your very last breath.

To be overwhelmed by anxiety to such a point cannot be healthy for anyone.

The thing with fear and anxiety, is it attacks us in 2 different ways. Firstly, to be under constant pressure, pushes up stress levels and hormones in our bodies. It physically keeps us in a state of ‘fight or flight’ when specifically our adrenaline levels sky rocket. Research has shown when stress levels are constantly high, these hormones wrecks havoc on us and have a terribly negative impact on our bodies. Affecting everything from our hearts, digestive system, sleeping patterns and a whole host of other issues.

And the second way it attacks us, is in our mind. Fear can snap up our confidence levels, it can stop us from putting ourselves out there or trying new things. It can make you withdraw from all social activities and interactions. And when that happens, disappointment, depression and addictions are not far behind.

But if anyone understands the workings of the human body and mind, it is God. And He constantly gives us reminders not to fear, to be bold and to be courageous.

He tells us not to worry, because worry does not add a single hour to our lives.

He tells us that He gives us peace, that we should not let our hearts be troubled.

God tells us that He has overcome the world so we should not be afraid.

He tells us that when we are burdened that He will give us rest.

He tells us that there is no need for us to fear, because He has given us a sound mind.

The bible is filled with reassurances that He will always be with us through those tough and emotional seasons of our lives. That fear should never have its grip on us. And if you are feeling overwhelmed and anxious to look to to Him, because He has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, of love and of a sound mind.

‘Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9 NIV

Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

Luke 12:25-26 NIV

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

John 14:27 NIV

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30 NIV

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
