A few weeks ago, my eldest son, Judah asked me what does my WhatsApp status mean and questioned why don’t I ever change it? I have had the same status since I opened my WhatsApp account several years ago. It simply says, ‘Live Called’.
To be honest with you, I cannot remember who to even give credit to for this status. It possibly was a random post which popped up somewhere on one of my social media feeds. I was certainly drawn to these words, and kept it close to my heart. Firmly cementing it as my go-to status.
When Jude’s curiosity got the better of him and he questioned me, I explained to him what I understood it to mean. I also went ahead and did a little research so I could be sure I was teaching my child correctly. (So seriously, it’s so important to be truthful with your kids, give them clear and honest information from an early age. The last thing you want is for them find out you lied to them or didn’t know what you were talking about when they turn to Google for the real answers…)
When I researched ‘Live Called’ I found that the bible speaks about it in the book of Ephesians,
‘As a prisoner of the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.’Ephesians 4:1 (NIV)
Paul, wrote this portion of scripture whilst in prison, he reminds us that the life we lead, must be shown worthy of the call God has given us. It works hand in hand. Your call to serve God and the kind of life you live, should mirror each other. So Paul is telling us that we can’t be in the service of the Lord and live an unworthy life at the same time. These two things rely heavily on each other. So, great, well done to me! I was on the right track with my interpretation of ‘Live Called’. But…… Yes, there’s a ‘but’ here… (Cue the suspense music…)
But… I do feel that sometimes, this is a bit difficult to completely stay on the straight and narrow as we live in a real world with real problems and no solutions to some of those problems? And life can be so incredibly distracting. We easily get wrapped up with daily life and become terribly unfocused by the many trials life throws our way. Being the people we are, when things don’t go our way or go completely awry, the first thing we do is start to question God, ’Where are you God?’ and ‘Why me?’ and ‘What have I done to deserve this?’ (Yeah, you know what I’m talking about…) It’s at times like these that we can easily go right off the path God has called us to be on.
This is the reason I held on to these two words. Through some tough life lessons I learnt I need to remind myself that I am called. In times when life throws me some curve balls, before I go totally off the rails and make some bad decisions. I remind myself that I am called, I remind myself that I am part of something greater. ‘Live Called’ is there to remind me that I am loved, and that I am set apart. It’s there to remind me, to never again lose sight of what God has called me to do. (Note to self: Tough Life Lessons make good blog posts.)
The Bible also says in ‘For many are called but few are chosen’Matthew 22:14 (KJV)
I believe that people who understand what it is to ‘Live Called’ and practice it diligently are the ones who are set apart from the many who are called but not chosen. (Read that again if you must.) I don’t know about you, but man do I want to be chosen…I want to live a life which is pleasing to the Lord…
So, to all who wonder if I ever will change my status? Thank you very much! I think I will be holding on dearly to it even in the years to come. One day, when WhatsApp is long gone or progressed into some other popular platform, I will still have the same status floating around. Which will be somewhere up there in the cloud… In the meantime, my WhatsApp will continue to remind me to ‘Live Called’. So that, one day I will be confident that I will be chosen because I ‘Live Called’
