My Tired is Tired
Have you ever been so tired that your tired was tired, so tired that you were already tired for tomorrow? Yes? Well then you are in the right place because my goodness, am I tired and in need of good ole R&R.
Strange, I know, especially since we just got back from the holidays and we just warmed up to the new year. But yes, it is true, I am already exhausted for 2021 and simple tasks like getting out of bed right now is like participating in an extreme sport.
As you can imagine, concern for my tired state of affairs started to plagued me, and I set out to find the reason why I felt this way. I quickly discovered that I am not alone in this gruelling battle and there are numerous reasons why exhaustion consumes me the way it does. I found that it could be my diet or an illness, however in my research nothing came up more than plain old stress.
How do you find rest for your constant state of tired?
In today’s fast paced world, purposeful rest is often pushed to the side-lines as we try to cram more into our already hectic schedules. For the majority of us, there are never enough hours in a day to complete our to-do lists and daily tasks. It is because of this chaotic lifestyle that our ability to have a restful sleep is deeply impacted. Yip, we are all too familiar with the endless tossing and turning.
But are you aware that sleep deprivation has now been found to be the leading cause of depression and anxiety? And stress is a major contributor to many ailments and disorders found in our adult working population? (Hey Shiela, did you know that we don’t sleep enough that’s why we be stressing out?)
So, if rest is what we are in need of, how do we get it? Especially considering the act of taking time off sets us back on our goals and deadlines. Which in turn causes more stress and sleepless nights? It’s an endless cycle of anxiety and pressure.
But I sleep like a baby, so where is my tired coming from?
But real rest goes a little deeper than just having the miraculous ability to sleep. This certainly does not explain my problem away because sleep is something that I am not short off. In fact, I can sleep for far more hours than I even need to. So where was my tired coming from?
So, I learned that there are two types of rest that a person requires. The first is to find rest from physical exhaustion, which is remedied by sleep. And second is to find rest from mental exhaustion, which is to find peace.
So what I am in need of may not be physical rest but may be mental rest? Whatever it is, rest of some sort is required.
The problem with being on the constant go is at some point you are going to burn out. At some point your body or mind is going to force you to take the rest it so desperately craves. Which is why I am constantly tired despite having great lengths of deep sleep.
Jesus Understands the Importance of Rest.
So, let me teach you and myself the Biblical Promise of Rest. Jesus, was a man who walked the face of the planet just as we currently do. He felt what we feel, and certainly got tired and was in need of rest like we to today. He identified this need and even instructed His disciples to take a minute to ‘come and rest’. And no matter how short that rest was, the fact is that He outright asked them to do it.
‘Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them. “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” ‘MARK 6:31
We see in the preceding verses the disciples were hard at work, Jesus had sent them out to minister for the first time on their own. And that was no easy task considering the instructions Jesus sent them out with (Mark 6:7-13). Jesus prepared them for an arduous mission. They also would have been through a great deal emotionally considering that they had received news that one so dear to them, John the Baptist had been killed. So, we see the disciples with a heavy workload combined with grief. Not an ideal situation for the best of us.
The Bible goes on to say that when they returned, the disciples were so hard at work that they did not even have time to eat. People constantly surrounded them. But Jesus, right in the midst of a demanding ministry understood the importance of taking a moment to rest. “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” ‘ He said.
Let Jesus Carry the Burden
Today, I don’t know what may burden you. But I do believe that you need not be concerned right to the point that you cannot find peace. I know that you need not be concerned that by taking a timeout your success will come to a screeching halt.
I also know that you are thinking, “Yeah right, Deshni that is easier said than done.” But I want you to read what Jesus said in the Book of Matthew.
‘ “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”’MATTHEW 11:28-30
When Jesus said that He will give you rest, He meant that in order for you to find rest and peace, you need to trust Him to handle the consequences of what is keeping you up at night.
Trusting someone else to handle your issues is never easy. But remember that the burden may be heavy for you to bear but it is light for Him…
Today, I pray that you and I may lay our burdens it at the feet of Jesus. And allow Him the opportunity to give us the true rest and peace our bodies and minds are so desperately crying out for…
